Well, the big day can actually fall on any Tuesday between February 3 and March 9. Carnival celebration starts on January 6, the Twelfth Night (feast of Epiphany); and picks up speed until Midnight on Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday.
So, Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday. And Ash Wednesday is always 40 days before Easter. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox, which generally occurs on March 21. | 2009 | February 24th | | 2010 | February 16th | | 2011 | March 8th | | 2012 | February 21st | | 2013 | February 12th | | 2014 | March 4th | | 2015 | February 17th | | 2016 | February 9th | | 2017 | February 28th | | 2018 | February 13th | | 2019 | March 5th | | 2020 | February 25th | Got it? Yes, we agree, it's confusing. So our scientists here at St. Louis Mardi Gras have worked out the dates for the celebration for you until the end of the next decade. (Okay, we just looked it up in an almanac..) Fat Tuesday will fall on these dates in the future, so mark your calendar. Here in St. Louis, the Grand Parade is held on Saturday, 3 days earlier, and the Dog Parade is two Sundays before or 9 days earlier. |
